Thur AM Hand-Building with Nic
Skill: Beginner+
Join Nic Payne for a hand-building class where students translate geological concepts into sculpture by creating layered, textured, agate type surfaces using slabs of stoneware clay, colored slips, and powdered clays.
In weeks 1-2, we create several slabs with interesting surfaces using a variety of stretching methods and textural enhancements. In weeks 3-5, we use these materials to construct unique sculptural forms. Our first project will be a “rocker” (circular slab vase often used for Ikebana) followed by one or two larger scale, more free-form sculptures.
Stain, glaze and finishing strategies are discussed and demonstrated on weeks 5-6 and throughout. Ticket price includes $20 materials fee for slips, powdered clays, and other items prepared or purchased for this class.
Thursdays, 10am – 1pm, Oct 29 to Dec 10
Class includes one scheduled 3-hour class per week and open studio time. Clay sold separately. Enjoy gorgeous food-safe glazes and consistent firings in our Bailey gas kilns. No classes are held the week of Thanksgiving; this class includes 6 lessons spread over 7 weeks.
