Friday-Sunday, Aug 28-30 at JTown Clay, 520 N 7th Street

Our soda-firing workshop is for ceramics enthusiasts who want to explore atmospheric firing, as well as experienced potters wanting to soda-fire in our 40 cubic foot Geil soda kiln, with our cool selection of glazes and flashing slips!

Participants help load their work into the kiln and gain knowledge about soda firing from discussions of clay bodies, wadding, glaze application methods, and the dynamics of soda firing.

Upon registration, participants receive recommendations for clay body (must be cone 10), dimensions & sizing for pieces, and other workshop details.

Day One    Friday, 10am – 6pm

Morning – overview of soda firing and glaze lesson; spray demo

Afternoon – prepare your pieces for soda firing using flashing slips, glazes, spraying

Late afternoon – pieces are wadded; soda kiln is loaded by end of day

Participants use our vast selection of glazes and flashing slips to finish their work.

Day Two    (Saturday / optional)

Kiln firing day! Optional for participants, but we’d love to have at least a few volunteers to help with spraying soda into the kiln in the afternoon. From early morning, staff fire the soda kiln through a normal reduction firing up to about cone 8-9. Kiln usually gets to cone 8-9 between 2-3pm, which is when we begin to spray a soda mixture into the kiln .

From 3pm-6pm, participants may assist with introduction of soda (via garden sprayers) into the kiln. This process takes 2-3 hours.

Day Three   Sunday, 1pm-5pm

Unload kiln; discuss results; organize shelving, posts, and clean up the kiln shed area. Learn how to remove wadding and grind bottoms of pieces as needed.
