José Mariscal Workshop II
Saturday – Monday, Apr 26-28, 10am-6pm
Higher Fire welcomes José Mariscal, coming all the way from Spain to JTown Clay at 520 N. 7th St. in San Jose for a workshop packed with throwing demos, crystalline glaze formulation & application, and firing/finishing tips.
Jose is widely regarded as a master ceramicist for his elegant porcelain vessels and stunning crystalline glazes. José grew up in a family of potters, having learned from his father at an early age in La Bisbal de Empordá; he has lived a potter’s life working in many studios until he opened his own in 2003.
This 3-day hands-on workshop allows students to practice techniques under guidance and supervision from José. Attendees participate in a crystalline glaze firing with bisqueware brought to the workshop (day 1) as well as throwing demonstrations & lab time (days 2-3) while the kiln is firing. On day 3 we unload kilns and discuss results.
Day 1: Crystalline glaze formulation, recipes, consideration of colorants, application of glazes to bisqueware, use of alumina glue for setting up pedestals for firing; loading the kilns.
Day 2: Focus on centering clay, making cylinders, and creating open and closed forms.
Day 3: Exploring narrow necks and two-part pieces. Trimming techniques to refine your pieces. Opening the kilns & separating pieces from pedestals.
Tuition includes your first 25lbs of clay, coffee/tea/breakfast each day.
Saturday – Monday, Apr 26-28, 10am-6pm
Ensure your ticket selection is for the “regular” OR “member” rate.
- $579 – regular, non-member rate
- $499 – studio member discounted rate
Please note: Both 3-day workshops with José at Higher Fire have similar content; we have scheduled two workshops back-to-back to give more people the opportunity to attend a workshop.
